Sharing Sports
It's the weekend and the game is on, but your honey told you that she wanted to spend some time with you. You also know that she's going to take it as a personal rejection if you ask if you can see her after the game, or the next day. You'd be happy to watch the game with her, but she's made her lack of interest in sports pretty clear. Here's something that might help out in this situation. Tell your girlfriend or wife that there's a game on you'd really like to see, but you'd love it if they'd give it a shot - it's something you'd really like to share with her. Remember, women really like the idea of compromise and sharing. It's not a guy thing to talk about, but it is something she will understand and relate to. Now, keep in mind that for this game, you will probably end up having to explain things about how the game is played to her. Perhaps she will know a little something, but if she hasn't enjoyed watching sports, she probably isn't going to know too much about how the game is played. Have on hand some of her favorite beverages. Have her come over a little earlier than the game, because you are going to spend a little while making her feel good. Talk with her a little, make sure she knows you bought her her favorite drinks. Let her feel wanted. Now, just before it's time to turn on the tv, tell her the basics about how the game is played. Let her ask a few questions, and answer them with patience - try hard not to sound condescending. Keep in mind that there are lots of things she knows about that you don't. This is just one thing that you do know about that she doesn't. Later, when things really start happening, you might be charged too full of adrenaline, but for now, make her feel part of things. If she asks too many questions for you to be able to answer while you watch, let her know that you will absolutely explain things during the commercials or other breaks. When things in the game DO get exciting, turn to her and try and let her join in your excitement - even if she doesn't understand exactly what happened. Turn to her and exclaim "That ref is totally blind" or "Did you see that shot?" Even when people don't fully comprehend an event, it is normal for them to be able to share in others' emotions, so don't keep her out - allow her to be part of your excitement. She'll feel she's a part of things, and that is what this is all about. When points are scored or something momentous happens, throw your arms around her - not like you would hug her, but with all your excitement. Let her feel that you're glad she's there - afterwards, tell her that you're glad she decided to watch with you. Think of these things as sort of positive reinforcement. If she feels more positive about you and sports, she won't be so bummed when she isn't there to watch with you, and you never know - she may actually enjoy the game. Even if you don't turn her into a sports fanatic, maybe she won't feel as left out and will learn to like watching sports with you.
